Follow Dan the Cherrypicker Man on a jam-packed day across Nottinghamshire – from installing a chimney liner at sunrise to navigating city traffic, rooftop repairs, and even dodging a wasp’s nest! With high-access jobs in tricky locations (and an unexpected flat tyre to finish), this video shows the real graft, quick thinking, and behind-the-scenes moments of life in the cherry picker.
In this episode of A Day in the Life of the Cherry Picker Man, I hit the ground running with a packed schedule across Nottinghamshire and into central Nottingham itself. From chimney liner installations and tile vent fittings to awkward tile repairs, a wasp’s nest, a taxi-rank parking gamble, and a flat tyre to finish it all off — this one had everything.
Let’s break it down.
Job 1: Chimney Liner Installation – Local to Base
The day starts close to home with a chimney liner install. The job involved:
- Exposing a capped flue
- Dropping in a flexible chimney liner
- Capping it off with a pot and sealing everything neatly
It’s one of those classic jobs where a solid setup, a good cherry picker position, and tidy finish makes all the difference. A smooth start… before traffic hits.
Job 2: Tile Vent Installation on a Three-Storey Building
Next stop: one of those tall city-edge buildings where access is everything. I was meeting a Sparky who needed a tile vent installing to feed a bathroom extractor.
The process:
- Expose the tiles and test for rafters
- Cut the membrane and drop the vent into place
- Connect the ducting neatly
- Drop it back down, job done
These jobs are quick if you know what you’re doing — and large concrete tiles make it easier.
Rain Starts Falling + Gutter Hedgehog Debate
As I packed up, the rain started, first time in weeks. I took a moment to revisit a job I did two years ago: gutter hedgehogs on front and back elevations.
Verdict?
- Still in place
- Gutters surprisingly clear
- Cleaning them would be a faff, but… overall a decent investment
Kinoulton, Nottinghamshire – Fragile Roof Tile Repairs
Onto the village of Kilnoulton next, where I teamed up with another roofer. The goal? Assist with access so he could repair damage on some unusual, thin-profile roof tiles.
Challenges:
- The tiles weren’t standard Double Roman — they were narrower and thinner
- Stock replacements aren’t available anymore
- Previous attempts involved patching with flashband and lead
We boomed over the roof with the cherry picker to inspect the worst areas. We agreed a repair of the chimney would require scaffolding and full wraparound, as the roofing firm won’t work from the cherry picker for chimney repairs, but we crack on with repairing the tiles. We also had to keep an eye on a live wasp’s nest just metres away — bonus hazard!
Job 4: Lintel Inspection in the Centre of Nottingham
Then it was into the heart of Nottingham city centre for a lintel and flashing inspection above an office window.
With nowhere else to park the cherry picker, I squeezed it into a taxi rank, hoping not to get a fine. (Spoiler: I didn’t — but I was ready to build the fine into the quote just in case!)
Inspection findings:
- Flashing looked okay
- But pointing around the window was poor
- Likely spot where water was getting in
I wrapped up the inspection and legged it back to the van before the traffic warden showed up.
A Flat Tyre Surprise to End the Day
Just as I thought I’d dodged all the drama, I spotted the real kicker: A completely flat tyre. Didn’t even notice it until I was packing up.
Because of course… why not end the day like that?
