If you’ve ever wondered what a full working day looks like for a roofer, chimney repairer, and wedding game hire business owner this is it! In this video, filmed across Nottinghamshire, I take you along as I tackle everything from a TV aerial removal in Radcliffe-on-Trent to chimney flaunching, roof leak surveys, a chimney liner installation, and even a garden game delivery for a wedding. Let’s break it all down.
Job 1: TV Aerial Removal in Radcliffe-on-Trent
The day kicks off in Radcliffe-on-Trent, where I was called out to remove an old, bent, unused TV aerial. These jobs are quick and straightforward, but still need safe access which is where my cherry picker comes in handy.
After a minor repositioning due to an overhead cable (we’ve all been there), the aerial was sliced off with a grinder. While I was up there, the customer asked if I could unblock the gutter, which I did, because why not?
This kind of job is ideal for:
- Quick cherry picker access
- Small-scale roofing work
- Minor maintenance without scaffolding
Bonus Job: Chimney Flaunching Repair
While removing the aerial, I noticed the chimney flaunching was failing. Rather than walk away, I snapped a photo, showed the homeowner, and offered a good rate to repair it on the spot.
Since I already had the tools and concrete on hand, I cleaned off the top of the chimney and smoothed out fresh concrete, explaining the process along the way:
- Why flaunching matters for keeping water out
- How freeze-thaw can damage brickwork over time
- What a proper flaunching should look like
Jobs 3 & 4: Roof Leak Inspections
Next, I headed off to carry out two roof leak surveys for local homeowners.
- First leak: Damp patches in the corners of a property
- Second leak: Water ingress into a top bedroom, and vegetation growing out of a rear chimney
For both, I:
- Visited the properties
- Took photos of the roof and problem areas
- Planned to write and send a full PDF report with issues, recommendations, and a quote
Surveys like this are essential for diagnosing problems before they get worse and are part of the wider service I offer across Nottinghamshire
Job 5: Chimney Liner Installation
The next job was to install a flexible stainless steel chimney liner a standard upgrade for homes fitting a new stove or dealing with an unsafe flue.
I brought:
- Screwdriver (not the impact—too aggressive!)
- Grinder for trimming the liner and cutting off clip tails
- Gloves and a scruffy fleece for the inevitable mess
After setup, the liner went in smoothly though it took longer than expected. Still, mission accomplished.
Final Job: Garden Game Delivery for a Wedding – Shindigs of Sherwood
With the roofing and chimney jobs done, I switched gears to my other business: Shindigs of Sherwood, hiring out giant wooden garden games for weddings and parties across Nottinghamshire.
