Why chimney re-pointing may be needed
Over time, the mortar between the bricks of your chimney stack is exposed to constant weathering. Rain, frost, wind, and heat all take a toll, causing the mortar to crack, crumble, or wash away. This can lead to loose bricks, water ingress, and structural instability. If left unchecked, deteriorated pointing can compromise the entire chimney and even cause damage to the interior of your property.
How we carry out chimney re-pointing
Once it has been agreed that the mortar between the chimney brick joints needs repointing, the first step is to remove all of the existing mortar.
We do this using an angle grinder to carefully grind out the face of each mortar joint to a depth of no less than 20mm. This depth ensures that the new mortar will bond properly and provide long-lasting durability.
After grinding out the joints, we use a high-powered blower to remove all dust and debris from between the bricks.
This step is essential any remaining dust can weaken the bond of the new mortar and reduce the effectiveness of the repair. With clean, dust-free joints, we begin applying the new mortar using a mortar gun.
This method allows us to fill each joint fully and evenly, ensuring the mortar is packed tightly all the way to the back of the joint with no voids or air pockets.
Once the joints are filled and the mortar reaches the appropriate consistency, we strike off the face of the mortar to create a clean, smooth finish.
This final step not only forms a watertight seal to protect against rainwater ingress but also leaves the chimney looking neat and professionally restored.
